A 2005 survey in Tlamacazapa conducted by Atzin revealed that 40% of the children aged 6-15 years were not in school, largely because of poverty, not having all the requirements to enter primary school, or early grade failure and dropout. An open-air school called Tihueliske (“We Can”), taught by young village women, provides basic literacy, tutoring and personal development. Dr. Susan Smith, Director of Atzin, is from Calgary and lives in Mexico overseeing the Atzin programs, which are designed to improve the life of the people of Tlamacazapa.
